An amazing line-up of some of the best Outersound bands (this side of the Atlantic) is happening this weekend in Minneapolis. The first annual Bathysphere festival spins up on Friday, with no less than 20 acts spanning multiple sub-genres over 2 days, and sporting many big-name artists including Sonic Boom, Dean & Britta (playing the songs of Galaxie 500) and A Place To Bury Strangers. I had desperately wanted to go, but circumstances didn’t quite work out, so instead I put together this podcast with some of my favorites as a sort of preview. To tie it all together, I interviewed Colin (of Chatham Rise) who helped put the festival together, about the meaning and impetus behind this epic gathering.
OU: What was the inspiration behind putting these shows together?
CR: Well, Chatham Rise has been pulling together lineups with many of our favorite bands for a few years now (please check out our posters), and this is a way to expand on that a bit and hopefully open up the path to Minneapolis. Minneapolis has many talented artists and the folks who live here generally have great taste in music. Sometimes great tours will head south or turn around at Chicago, and the bands and music fans living here would like to shed some more light on the Twin Cities if we can…
OU: Also, what’s the meaning behind the name?
CR: A bathyspere is an undersea discovery vessel, and with this festival we are hoping this becomes an annual event where we can surface some wondrous new sounds and bring more fans to artists that carry musical depth.
OU: How did the lineup develop, getting in touch with bands and whatnot?
CR: We contacted our favorite bands and we are very excited they are visiting us here…many for the first time. It will be truly festive as the majority of the artists in the lineup all know each other. There will be unique and special moments…don’t miss it.
OU: What’s the scene like for your kind of music in Minneapolis?
CR: It is very strong in my opinion and the local venues and listeners support it…in the Twin Cities we have: Magic Castles, Flavor Crystals, First Communion Afterparty, Is/Is, Chambermaids, Fire In the Northern Firs, Mother of Fire, Gospel Gossip, Leisure Birds, Pony Trash, Velvet Davenport, Driftwood Pyre, Delta Lyrae, Panther Ray, Gloss, Food Pyramid, Robust Worlds, Sativa Flats, Wizards Are Real, The Great Went, Nomia, The Bad Spots, Erros Magicos and more…do look into them…
OU: How are you promoting the show in your hometown?
CR: Radio, the entertainment mags, interviews, canvassing bars, record shops, restaurants, coffee shops, pounding the streets, sandwich boards, skywriting, door to door ticket salesmen, town criers are all deployed… thanks a lot Ryan – and readers do come see us all at First Avenue if you can…it is a blissful bargain of a weekend.
